Grade 6 Science “Ocean Discovery” Program

Grade 6 Marine Biology Class, Huntsman Marine, St. Andrews, NBThe Huntsman, in collaboration with the Province of New Brunswick, and School District 10, runs a successful Grade 6 Ocean Discovery program. However, you don’t have to be a local school, or a Grade 6 class, to plan a trip to visit us! We even have schools from as far away as Missouri bring elementary classes for a marine experience of a lifetime!

The Ocean Discovery Program includes two fun-filled days, and delivers most of New Brunswick’s Grade 6 Diversity of Life Science Unit.

With the pilot program, over 300 students from 15 schools – including two from Charlotte County – spent two days at the Huntsman. The project was a huge success, and it is now being expanded, with the first step being to include all Grade 6 classes from around Charlotte County. All Grade 6 classes from School District 10 visit the Huntsman to participate in the program.

Grade 6 Marine Biology Class, Huntsman Marine, St. Andrews, NBSome curriculum outcomes of the new Social Studies program, ‘Studying the interdependent relationship of people and their environment and the implications for a sustainable future’ are also met through the Huntsman’s hands-on approach to learning.

About the program:

The two-day on-site experience gives the students the opportunity - some for the first time – to spend a night away from home in a university research-style setting. Meals and sea creatures are provided. Students are given a workbook that includes course material for their stay. They visit a local beach to study the species that inhabit the intertidal zone. They also collect some specimens that are then examined in the labs and perform a variety of experiments, including drawing what they see under the microscopes. They have a unique opportunity to learn more about marine biology from the many scientists and trained Huntsman staff. There is also a workshop given by a local fisheries company.

Comments on the program:

Grade 6 Marine Biology Class, Huntsman Marine, St. Andrews, NB“My favourite part of the whole experience was going to Brandy Cove. We got to explore all the amazing sea creatures and actually hold them in our hand! At the cove there were beautiful waterfalls and a wonderful view.” – Bianca Gruenewald, Grade 6

“When we looked at the amazing plankton in the powerful microscopes it was educational and very fun! We had groups of two students and we each had a slide with different plankton types. The phytoplankton types are always simple shapes and the zooplankton types are weird shapes.” – Jessica Bohnet, Grade 6

“Thank you for the best ever class outing!” Annette White, teacher
