Field Course Internships
University and high school students wishing to attend a field course may reduce their costs by working voluntarily at HMSC in advance of their course(s). This work may cover any and several of the areas outlined above depending on HMSC needs and student ability. Accommodation is provided on campus at a reduced rate. This option is not available for all field courses, so please apply well in advance indicating your course preferences, and dates you would be available for work.

Work Experience - Internships
Every year The HMSC (HMSC) provides work experience opportunities for people of all ages in every department. In recognition of this, the Conference Board of Canada awarded the "Top Employer of Youth" for New Brunswick to HMSC in 2000.
What type of work is available?
- Administration - office support, receptionists, filing, database development
- Aquaculture - maintenance facilities, care of fish, water quality monitoring
- Aquarium - guide visitors, care for animals, shop sales
- Boats - crew on the Research Vessel Fundy Spray
- Education - help organize school and university student groups on campus
- Grounds - landscaping, flower gardens, planting, lawn mowing
- Information technology - web site development, database development, computer systems maintenance
- Laboratory - technical support for teaching laboratories
- Maintenance - carpentry, plumbing
- Marine Biology - species identification, sample processing, data management
- Research - assist various projects in the laboratory, field and/or office
- Residences - live-in warden
Who may apply?
- Students from universities, community colleges and high schools
- Graduates - both recent and returning to work
- Under-employed and un-employed
- Persons wishing to work part-time

Efforts will be made to accommodate people with physical disabilities. In the past year, people from Australia, Germany, Africa, Ireland, USA and many of the Canadian provinces worked at HMSC.
Financial Assistance
Is funding available? Yes, but through a variety of different sources, and not always predictable. In many cases people arrange to work as volunteers and HMSC helps to defray their accommodation costs.
Summer students may be employed through the:
- Human Resources and Development Canada (HRDC) summer students employment scheme
- New Brunswick Department of Employment and Training Student Employment (SEED) scheme
Recent graduates, the under-employed and unemployed may be sponsored under the:
- NB Department of Employment and Training Work Expansion program
- NB Department of Employment and Training Workability program
Positions of up to 12 months may be based on funding obtained by HMSC from a variety of sources.
